Interesting post which reaches compelling conclusions. A slight aside, but it strikes me that there is a link to be made here with the idea(/research) that we are very poor at judging against criteria and much better at comparing. Trying to quantify your ‘understanding’ (or knowledge) of medieval kingship is pointless, comparing it Professor McKitterick’s makes your actual level of understanding (knowledge) far clearer. Time to stop judging students’ ‘understanding’ as a distinct quality altogether…?
